About this site

DriveSafe.org.nz has been developed to help visitors to New Zealand safely enjoy their self-drive holiday.

Driving is a great way to experience all New Zealand has to offer. But driving in New Zealand may be unlike driving in other countries.

This site provides basic information about New Zealand road rules and etiquette, along with links to more details about everything that those unfamiliar with our roads need to know.

The site has three sections:

We encourage visitors to return to the site at each stage of their trip for more guidance and ideas.

DriveSafe.org.nz is an initiative under the Visiting Drivers Signature Project, which is a key deliverable under the government's Safer Journeys Action Plan 2013-15.

As part of the project, a Code of Practice has been developed for these New Zealand rental vehicle companies. It aims to improve the safety of both visiting drivers and New Zealand road users. Discover which New Zealand rental vehicle companies have signed up to the Code of Practice.

Development of this site has been led by the Tourism Industry Association New Zealand (TIA), with support from the New Zealand Transport Agency, the rental vehicle operators listed below, website developer Cabbage Tree Creative and images from Photo New Zealand.
